Last week Mercer PR managing director Lyall Mercer presented at the 2017 Institute of Mercantile Agents (IMA) National Conference at the International Convention Centre in Sydney. Mr Mercer regularly presents at conferences and this was his second time speaking at this event.
His topic was ‘Handling the media vs being handled by the media’. Key points included the importance of building trust with stakeholders and the public and how to build that trust, controlling the message, managing issues and negative publicity, and communicating through a crisis.
“The debt collection industry plays a vital role in the economy by assisting businesses to be paid what they are due, yet the sector often receives negative publicity. While some of that may be justified, the vast majority of those within the industry are highly reputable and act morally and ethically, and it was a privilege to help them better connect with and educate the public,” he said.
